See How to Extend the Life and Function of Your Silt Fence

August 02, 2016

Silt fences help preserve and protect water quality in streams, rivers & lakes, and oceans that may be otherwise be polluted from sediment during construction work. In order to function optimally, silt fences require routine inspection at regular intervals during usage. Regular maintenance saves money and helps ensure the fence is intact and working to effectively control silt and sediment. Use the following tips to get the most out of your silt fence:

  1. Check for straining due to increased sediment accumulation and remove sediment from any affected areas - this decreases tension, extends the life of the fence, and increases its ability to function properly.
  2. Inspect the fence after each rainfall as increased sediment and other materials tend to accumulate during storms.
  3. Look for gaps and tears along the fence. If any are found, replace and/or repair the fabric to ensure the fence remains in good working condition.
  4. Once sediment level reaches one quarter to one third the height of the fence, it should be removed. Additionally, sediment must be removed when the silt fence itself is removed after completion of the job.
