Beat Heat Stress in 5 Easy Steps

July 05, 2016

During summer's hot months, the incidence of heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke rise sharlply. But harmful effects of the heat can be avoiced with these 5 simply strategies:

  1. Choose workwear designed to alleviate heat load on the body such as those that offer trans-evaporative cooling as well as UV protection.
  2. Wear a cooling "bandana" to reduce heat & discomfort to the head and neck area where heat loading commonly occurs. A brimmed hat can also reduce the effects of the sun's rays while adding a nape protector maximizes protection to the head & neck area.
  3. Keep cool water easily accessible during the job. Electrolyte replacement beverages also work well but avoid soda and caffeinated energy drinks.
  4. Plan your work schedule to avoid working outdoors in the most intense heat of the day if possible. If working in direct sunlight cannot be avoided, take frequent breaks in a shaded area.
  5. Avoid greasy, high fat foods. Lighter meals help the body tolerate the heat much more effectively. Choose a small sandwich, a piece of fruit, and water or unsweetened iced tea with lemon.
