5 Ways to Prevent Eye Injuries in the Workplace

June 06, 2016

Every day in the U.S., approximately 2000 workers sustain an work-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. Fortunately, these injuries can be prevented with the following tips recommended by NIOSH.

  1. Create a safe work environment by minimizing hazards from falling or unstable debris. Make sure that tools work and safety features (machine guards) are in place. Be sure that workers (particularly volunteers) know how to use tools properly. And also keep bystanders out of the hazard area.
  2. Evaluate safety hazards by identifying the primary hazards at the site. Look for potential hazards posed by nearby workers, large machinery, and falling/shifting debris.
  3. Wear the proper eye and face protection. Select the appropriate eye protection for the job and be sure the eye protection is in good condition, fits properly and stays in place.
  4. Use good work practices by ensuring you do not rub eyes with dirty hands or clothing. Clean eyewear regularly and brush shake or vacuum dust an debris from hardhats, hair, forehead, or the top of the eye protection before removing the protection.
  5. Prepare for eye injuries and first aid needs by having an eye wash station or having eye wash and sterile solution on hand.
